The cold weather will... slow down the bacterial growth needed for slipping the hair.....some one suggested lime would stop smell but...I kind of raised my eyebrows at that as I have never had lime...

If it were me....depending on how large the "vat" is.....say if it was a large round garbage can size..I myself would not put more than 2 hides in together ...you do not have enough hide in contact...

Had to pop home to let the alarm guy in (the darn alarm started going off in the night - sure I am popular with the neighbors) and checked the hides. Definitely a lot more slippage going on there....
